John Matthews, who worked in real estate, opened Wildlife Wonderland in 1985, in a place close to Westernport Bay. There were several elements to the park, including a giant worm display, an area for koalas and wombats, café and a restaurant. It immediately got quite popular, and many people came to see the exhibits – 350,000 visitors actually came to the attraction every year.
