3. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands

While not technically part of India, the Andaman and Nicobar islands is a Union Territory of India floating in the Bay of Bengal. It’s made up of 572 islands, but only 26 of them are inhabited. The Andaman Islands were of great importance to the Indian Independence movement. A prison located on the islands was used by the British military to torture and imprison pro-independence Indian activists. Nowadays, the islands are one of India’s most popular tourist destinations.

The reasons to love the Andaman and Nicobar islands are many: the stunning sunsets, beautiful white sand beaches, world-renowned diving locations, verdant forests and the friendly local population. Port Blair is the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar, and it’s a historically important place to India and the islands, along with having many scenic attractions. The century-old British prison is another significant attraction in Port Blair. It once served as a colonial prison during the British occupation of India. Throughout British rule in India, hundreds of freedom fighters and pro-independence activists were transported to this remote jail. Today the prison stands as a symbol of cruelty faced by Indian activists at the hands of the British.
