It is common for actors to start their career in the theatre and O’Neill was no exception. He started out in 1979 in the Helen Hayes Theater in Midtown Manhattan in the play Knockout. With that, he got the attention of director William Friedkin and got his first role in a film playing a police detective in Cruising, starring Al Pacino. But the real takeoff for O’Neill’s career was Married… With Children. From then on, he started to get roles in many movies such as The Bone Collector, Little Giants and Dutch.
