Spoiler alert: the Great Sphinx isn’t actually a sphinx at all depending on where you are in the world. In ancient Greek depictions, a sphinx has the body of a lion, the head of a woman, and the wings of a bird. In ancient Egypt, a sphinx instead had the head of a man.
This was called an androsphinx by the ancient Greeks.
