According to rumours, Shackleton had recruited his crew by posting the following ad in a London newspaper: “Men wanted for a hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in the event of success.” At least, he didn’t hide anything, and his crew probably weren’t surprised when they got on the journey.
