Lighthouse Reef is located on the easternmost
end of the Belize Barrier Reef. Here is where you’ll find the Blue Hole. It’s
unsurprisingly hugely popular for scuba diving and everyone is constantly
trying to answer the question “What exactly is down there?” At 420 feet deep,
it’s hard to say. The hole isn’t for beginning divers. It’s required that
hopefuls complete 24 dives before attempting to go down themselves.
The cavernous, massive marine sinkhole is huge enough that it can comfortably fit two Boeing 747 planes with space to spare. It’s impossible not to wonder what lies beneath when staring into the abyss. The sheer drop into the murky, inky depths is bound to provoke questions: is it hiding hideous monsters? A civilization?
