The Belize Barrier Reef makes up a huge part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System which stretches from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula all the way to Honduras. This makes it the second largest reef system on the planet, second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It can be found off the coast of Belize.

Charles Darwin sailed through the area all the way back in the mid 19th century. The naturalist was in awe of the reef, stating that it was “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies.” In the middle of this massive reef system is Belize’s Blue Hole, a deep sapphire jewel contrasting with the tepid Caribbean waters. It’s easy to see that Darwin really wasn’t kidding when he gushed about how beautiful it was all those years ago.
