Retton ended up taking second position behind Szabo in the all-around competition, but in the floor and vault trials she got perfect scores, which got her the gold medal and made her the first American to ever get the top spot. In fact, she got five medals at the event – one gold, two silvers and two bronzes. Because of her achievements, she got nicknamed “America’s sweetheart” but she retired just two years later. She started a family with Shannon Kelley and had four daughters with him, Shayla, McKenna, Skyla and Emma, who were all passionate about gymnastics.
