In order to proceed to the cleaning of the canal, they had to make a dam so that the different parts could be separated… But that also meant that the canal wasn’t going to remain as peaceful and as lovely as it was before. The works meant that there was going to be cranes and machinery around the canal, disturbing its usual peacefulness. People walking around and used to the area might have believed they would be able to lift the things themselves, but that would have been a mistake to believe that since the slabs were in fact much too big to be lifted by humans.
