Varna, Bulgaria: Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship Memorial

The seaside city of Varna is now a favorite haunt among fun-loving party hardy tourists, but it wasn’t always so! Located high above the town on a hillside, the idea was that the imposing cubic faces of soldiers could be seen all the way out to the sea. The monument was created in honor of the Soviet army for its role in the Siege of Varna, and indeed through the ‘70s and ‘80s, Bulgaria was the USSR’s closest ally in the Balkans.

The Siege of Varna was part of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829.
