Tjentiste, Bosnia and Herzegovina: Tjentiste War Memorial

Surprisingly, this monument isn’t a testament to friendship or a great victory. It’s actually commemorating a massive military blunder. It’s probably one of the most striking monuments on a list of arresting structures. The Tjentiste War Memorial consists of two craggy stone blocks that have been cut to seem like they’ve broken in two, revealing a massive mountain behind them. It was created in the 1970s to commemorate Operation Fall Schwarz, or the Battle of Sutjeska.

During World War II, Axis forces attacked a Yugoslav unit and attempted to capture the unit’s leader. They were unable to reach their goal, but in the process managed to kill over 7,000 people, most of whom were just regular citizens caught in the crossfire. The structure was erected in their memory.
