9. Lake Titicaca, Bolivia

This sacred lake is the highest navigable lake in the world and South America’s largest.

Believed to be the birthplace of the sun by the Andean indigenous people, its deep waters hold vast cultural importance to the cultures that call the lake home. The largest town on the shore is Copacabana, but that’s just the beginning of the region’s storied settlements.

The islands floating close to shore are made by hand, woven by the Uros people from floating reeds for hundreds of years. Hiking, kayaking and spending time in guesthouses and homestays is a great way to just scratch the surface of the lake’s singular, unique culture.
