A big regret for Estela and Manuel as a couple was the fact that they never had been able to have a family. It was something they both wanted, but they soon discovered that Estela had some fertility issues and that she wouldn’t be able to get pregnant. When she was interviewed later on and reflected on the long life she had without a family, Estela simply commented: “We have suffered enormously because of it.” Although they had seen doctors for advice, the reason for Estela’s infertility remained a mystery for many decades. And to make things even worse, Estela had had a very uncomfortable stomach for many years, creating a worrying situation, but soon enough it would actually be the least of the old woman’s worries.
